According to the resolution of Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchy (magazine ¹17, December 15, 1999) “Department of (religious) theologic-patriotic education in liasion with Armed Forces and other military formations of Ukraine” was founded and the prorector of Kyiv Theologic Academy archpriest Dimitry Sadoviak was appointed the Heard of the Department.
June 24, 2001 the Department was registered by the State Committee for religions affairs in Ukrane. (sertificate ¹72).
Department of theologic-patriotic education in liasion with Armed Forces and other military formations of Ukraine in Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchy a religious organization.
In its activity the Department is ruled by the Statut for management and the Statut of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kyiv Patriarchy, by others of the Heard of Ukraine Orthodox Church – His Holiness Patriarch of Kyiv and Rus-Ukraine, by resolunions of All-Church and Bishop (Congress – Sobor – Councils) and Holy Synod and also by the Statut which is approved by the Holy Synod of Ukraine Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchy.
The purpose of the Department is ensurance of mutual cooperation of Ukrainian Orthodox Church with commanding staff of military formations, subdivisions, unions, establishments, institutions and other structures of Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations of Ukraine, coordination and practical provision of pastor and theologic-educational activity of the Church among the (military) servicemen and in civil security units.
The Department represents: Ukraine Orthodox Church in its relations with the leadership of military units and other structures of Armed Forces, ministries and administrations, with include military subdivisions of civil security; taking care of Orthodox servicemen and co-workers of Armed Forces and other military units of Ukraine, ensurance of their religious education and instruction and also corresponding pastor work; performs Church-civil activities in sphere that deals with the specified activities of the Department such as in science, culture, education, patriotic education, cooperation with mass media.
Presently about 4 thousand parishes and about 3 thousand priests belong to Kyiv Diocese.
